West Fork High School (WFHS) student Adam Theobald has been named a Commended Student in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. 

The national merit scholarship program is an annual academic competition conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) for high school students. Students enter the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Over 1.3 million students compete each year and may qualify as Commended Scholars, Semifinalists, or Finalists, with the top finalists earning scholarships sponsored by the NMSC. 

This year, Adam Theobald, senior at WFHS, was named a Commended Scholar, placing him in the top 34,000 scoring students across the country. 

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a NMSC spokesperson. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.” 

This achievement marks a historic milestone, as this is the first recognition by the NMSC in WFHS history. According to WFHS Principal Bridgett Heine, Adam exemplifies the qualities worthy of this honor. 

“Adam Theobold is an extraordinary student whose strong academic merit and active involvement across campus make him truly well-rounded,” Ms. Heine said. “His work ethic, persistence, and natural ability to connect with his peers set him apart as a leader among students.”
